Reflection on The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds

 

I really enjoyed reading The Dot because I think it is something a lot of children, and even adults, can relate to. There are a few messages behind this simple story that I think allow the story to leave an impression on everyone. One of which is just simply trying and believing in yourself. As I made my own version of a dot, I was unsure of what I wanted to create and how it would turn out. Rather than sitting and looking at a blank canvas, I chose to go with the first idea that popped in my head-rainbow dots. I thought this was a small, fun project to do and could be a great way to bring art into any classroom without students feeling overwhelmed.

Getting to Know Me!

Hello and welcome to my children's literature blog! Throughout the rest of the year, I will be reading 50 children's books and then giving my summary and evaluation of each book on here. I hope this gives ideas to anyone reading, or even just for myself to look back upon in the future as I am in the classroom. On that note, my aim is to be in a school with my own classroom around this time next year! My degree will be in 4-8 Mathematics, but I believe reading is valuable no matter what subject is being taught. I hope to be able to incorporate books that I read now in my classroom whether it be just a funny story, a meaningful story, or an educational one. Frederick by Leo Lionni

Caldecott Honor Winner  Caldecott book This story is about a little family of mice who are preparing for the upcoming winter. One of the mice, Frederick, doesn’t seem to be doing any work like everyone else, but he tells them he is gathering sunshine, words, and color. When winter comes and most of the supplies are gone and morale is low, Frederick is able to cheer everyone up with the unique supplies he gathered.  Frederick would be great for preschool and kindergarten ages due to it’s simple storyline and fun pictures. I would use this book with young students for a teacher read aloud or as a book that students are able to look at on their own. This could be used to talk about being prepared and how everyone can bring different, yet still important resources to the table.

Miss Malarkey Doesn't Live in Room 10 by Judy Finchler

illustrated by Kevin O'Malley  No major awards  Realistic Fiction  This story perfectly describes students’ misconceptions about their teachers when they are young. A young boy believes his teacher, Miss Malarkey, lives at school along with all the other teachers. To his surprise, Miss Malarkey moves into the same apartment building as him. The young boy learns a lot about Miss Malarkey and tells his friends, to their surprise as well, that Miss Malarkey doesn’t live at school. In the end, the boy is happy Miss Malarkey lives close to him because he won’t see much of her once he goes to the next grade, but he now thinks his next teacher probably lives in room 12.  I think this story would be best for students in Kindergarten or first grade. I think it could be a humorous way to allow students to see their teachers as people outside of the classroom, something that is often confusing for students new to school. I probably would not use this book because of the age level.
